Jeffrey Beecher,
Principal- Double Basses
Jeffrey Beecher pursues a varied musical career as both an
energetic performer and educator. Currently principal
bass player with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra,
Beecher has performed with the Royal Concertgebouw
Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Minnesota
Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony, and the Orchestra of St.
Luke's.
An active chamber musician, Beecher has enjoyed
performing at such venues as Bargemusic, Weill Recital
Hall, Zankel Hall, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln
Center, the 92st Y, and Merkin Hall. He has also
performed at numerous festivals including the
Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival, the Salt Bay
Chamber Festival, and the Marlboro Music Festival.
Beecher is also a regular member of Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road
Ensemble. He tours frequently with the Ensemble,
performing in the major venues of North America, Europe,
and Asia. Mr. Beecher has participated as a mentor along
with other members of the Silk Road Ensemble in the
Weill Institute Professional Training Workshops at
Carnegie Hall. He appears on the most recent Silk Road
Ensemble's album, Off the Map.
He currently serves on the faculties of the Glenn Gould
School of the Royal Conservatory of Music and the
University of Toronto.
Mr. Beecher began his musical education in New York
where he attended the Juilliard School of Music and the
Manhattan School of Music. He completed his studies at
the Curtis Institute of Music with Harold Robinson and
Edgar Meyer. Beecher recently composed and produced
music for an internationally broadcast television show
entitled Travels to the Edge with Art Wolfe. He plays on a
double bass made by Giovanni Battista Rogeri made in
Brescia, Italy in 1690.
